Use of Seasonal Calendars

A tool that shows patterns of natural and human activities in a complete year geographically specific based on available data. This tool identifies the risks and opportunities associated with different seasons and designs appropriate interventions and strategies to cope with them (ACAPS, 2024).

Climate Adaptation Effectiveness

By scheduling planting with real-time climate information via seasonal calendars, smallholder farmers were able to coincide with the early or late rainy seasons or avoid disasters. (Chandra et al., 2017, p.222)

The seasonal calendar was developed under the auspices of the climate-resiliency field school. These practices however are knowledge intensive and required training, farmer time, and NGO resources. (Chandra et al. 2017)

Since farmers use the seasonal calendar to record their own weather observations, this indicates that this climate change solution is useful and acceptable to them. Farmers also reported that seasonal calendars are better tools for planting under organic agriculture compared to relying on fertilizers and chemicals to mitigate drought effects on high-value crops—indirect contribution to GHG mitigation.
