Installation of rip-rap and used fishnets as barriers (household level)

Rip-raps in engineering and environmental contexts are described as a layer of large stones that protects soil from erosion in areas of high or concentrated flows (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2021). The rip-rap design is specific to its purpose and exposure to hydrological actions. In the Philippines, rip-raps are household-level adaptive capacities used to elevate houses (Peñalba et al., 2021). Fishnets are also used to create stabilization of rocks in the household coastal zones.

Regardless of the purpose and area designed, rip-raps are used for slope barriers or protections, soil erosions, and coastal floodings. Rip-rap is even more useful for areas where other erosion control established have exceeded their stabilization capacity (MPCA, 2019 as cited in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2021).

Installation of rip-rap as barriers is considered a short-term strategy that can only be afforded by households with extra financial resources. This is considered a more affordable alternative to raising floor areas of houses. For households that cannot afford such adaptation option, they are left to clean the debris after water subsides but at no extra cost since women/wives will do this task.

Installation of rip-rap as barriers can only be afforded by households with extra financial resources. The decision to purchase rip-rap often comes from the husband who is often the main income earner of the family. It seems that the document is inconclusive when it comes to social acceptability. Financial resource plays a role in their decision. If they dont, they stand to lose more due to SLR. It seems that they are not entirely against this practice but rather it depends if they can afford it.

One environmental impact of this adaptation option is that it leads to the destruction of marine and coastal resources since community members extract sand, gravel, and stones from the shores and seas. While a local ordinance prohibits this activity, this is not strictly implemented.
