Mushroom Production

Mushroom production is part of the Department of Agriculture's urban agriculture program. It involves the cultivation of mushroom in a growing medium of organic substance like ground wood chips, hay and compost, or leaves. [2]

Climate Adaptation Effectiveness

Mushroom growing in climate controlled environment avoids risk from variability of rainfall and temperature.

Evaluations

Economic / Financial Effectiveness
High

Growing mushrooms can be less expensive compared to other cash crops since it does not require a lot of space and raw materials can be very cheap [1]. If one has a one-hectare rice field, an additional income of Php 100,000 per year can be generated from mushroom production, wherein rice straw from the field can be used as growing medium. Mushroom spawns costing less than Php 100 can produce Php 400 worth of mushrooms. [3]

Technical Feasibility
Mid

Mushroom production in the Philippines has a competitive advantage due to its ideal climatic condition. In addition, there is abundance of agro-wastes used as substrate materials. Despite these, there is lack of technological development and mushroom training and extension services for mushroom growing in the country. [1]

Social Acceptability
Mid

There are many small-scale producers of mushroom with a few large-scale producers in Tagaytay, Batangas, and Baguio [1]. It can be a profitable business but there is general lack of awareness on mushroom farming. [3]

Environmental Impact
Mid (+)

This solution lessens agricultural wastes. Mushroom production also improves farm ecosystems encouraging the presence of microorganisms and insects beneficial to the soil. [3]

Mitigation co-benefit

This solution helps manage agricultural wastes contributing to climate mitigation.
