Permeable Pavements

Permeable pavements allow water to move through void spaces within the pavement [1]. These are ideal for residential, commercial, urban, industrial, and retrofit; but are not recommended for highways, streets, potential spill sites, and heavy loading. Examples of materials include porous asphalt, porous concrete, concrete pavers, or porous paver blocks which are interlocking units that are partially pervious, open-graded aggregatem or loosely compacted masses of rocks, and soft paving materials such as wood mulch and crushed shells.

Climate Adaptation Effectiveness

PCPs are effective mitigation strategies for underground water quality improvement and heat-island effects (Xie et al., 2018). A case study of an environmental group Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) of the use of permeable pavements in Davao City shows that flooding was lessened [1]. The albedo effect that increases atmospheric heat is also reduced. A similar study for Intramuros, Manila, observed that the volume of stormwater in the drainage system dropped by 50% [2].

Using permeable pavements eliminates costs for retention basins, curbs, gutters, and other water collection installations. The price ranges from Php180-200 for each turf to Php300-1,500 per square meter. As the solution is a combination of infiltration and pavement, the number of drainage canals is reduced which is beneficial for urban areas that have high land prices and insufficient space. [1]
