Technological and Construction Material-Based Measures Against Extreme Heat

Gray measures, one category under climate adaptive options for the built environment, make use of technology and construction materials to avoid the increase of heat hazard. Some examples of cooling through enhanced design are the use of insulation, solar blinds on exposed buildings, the creation of natural ventilation and shade, the selection of construction materials and reflective coatings, and modifying the form and layout of buildings [2].

Climate Adaptation Effectiveness

A pilot project in Sorsogon City made use of MIRACOOL, a high reflective heat insulating coating that reduces surface temperature of buildings. The application of the said coating on the roofs of a school caused the temperature to drop from 50 to 32 degrees. It was also observed that the room felt cooler. [3]
